New Guidelines Would Result in Thousands of Unnecessary Breast Cancer Deaths

PINK Breast Center

Screening only women ages 50-74 every other year, as now recommended by the American College of Physicians  (ACP) and the US Preventive Services Task Force, may result in up to 10,000 additional, and unnecessary, breast cancer deaths  in the United States each year.

That approach would also likely result in thousands more women enduring extensive surgery, mastectomies and chemotherapy for advanced cancers – and do little to nothing to address overdiagnosis or the harms of screening named in the ACP guidelines. PINK Breast Center believes women should continue to utilize the annual mammography benefit for women over the age of 40, which is provided (without copay or deductible) by all health insurance policies.
